Plants in My Backyard
Introduction
One of the best ways to start learning to grow plants is to start in your own backyard. Start with a small number (perhaps 3 vegetables or native plants), learn how to care for them and observe them over the seasons. Then, when you become more confident, plant some more. Since you are learning you will make lots of mistakes, but that's the fun of learning.
One new technology that may help you track your plants and keeping a running diary is the what3words app. Using Google Maps it divides your backyard into grids approximately 3m x 3m and assigns a 3 word unique code to each grid.
As a guide aim for the following. Remember that you can stack plants with some above and below the other so that they form a multi-storey forest or guild.
- 10% raised vegetable patch 1m x 4m
- 10 productive trees (fruit or nut)
- native plants to provide food and habitat for native animals
